Student Spotlight

Drew Beazley

Taking advantage of an extra year of NCAA eligibility just made sense for Drew Beazley who completed his BS in Business Economics with a minor in Entrepreneurial Studies. A native of Johnston, Iowa, initially recruited to SDSU for baseball, Drew used his extra year to complete the online MS in Human Sciences – Family Financial Planning degree.

This online degree is unique in that it is part of the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (GPIDEA). GPIDEA is a ‘consortium of public universities from across the United States, offering online, flexible, and affordable degree and certificate programs.’ This allows students to take courses from across the country and apply those seamlessly to their SDSU degree. “Completing my degree through the GPIDEA program was a rewarding experience,” states Drew. “My favorite part of the program was the flexibility. All information for the weeks’ assignments were prepared so the students could learn at their own pace while completing assignments before deadlines.”

This summer, Drew had the opportunity to take what he learned in the ‘classroom’ and apply that to his practicum at McGill Junge Wealth Management. Central to the curriculum is translating what is learned in class and applying that to real world experiences. Throughout the summer, Drew assisted with and observed customized wealth management and investment strategies, complex financial planning, and retirement income distribution strategies for clients.

Of the program, Drew concludes, “I was surrounded by professors that were highly educated, helpful, and committed to enhancing their students’ knowledge through their coursework. The various courses offered by the program touch on a wide range of financial planning topics and it interesting to learn about the various topics that go into the financial planning process as a whole.” Following graduation, Drew plans to hit the ground running and continue working as a financial planning professional.
